Some Help from Friends:

He had just gotten out of counselling. He was struggling a lot with his hurt and grief but he wouldn’t let people see that hurt in him. He was always the strong one, the friend people could lean on. Still, he had his struggles and people saw through his masques. He was a smoker. This day, after his counseling session, he was sitting and reflecting over the comments that his counselor had told him. He was smoking a cigarette, deep, lost in thought when an older man came and sat next to him on the bench. After a moment, this man started to cry, his sobs growing ever more audibly. The young man took a few breaths of his cigarette, unsure what to do but then turned to him and asked gently if he was alright. The older man started to sob, finally finding someone with whom to share his story. “My wife passed away a month ago,” he cried. “I don’t have any food and no one to spend time with. I am so lonely!” The older man asked for a cigarette. He withdrew his pack and offered him two. The man spoke to him for a couple of minutes and then asked him if he wanted anything from the coffee shop. The older man breathed deeply and asked him if he could buy him a coffee. The young man nodded and told him that he would be right back. Still, the older man followed him. When he went up to order the coffee, he noticed that the older man held back. He asked the employee for a sandwich and a donut and a coffee. He got a coffee for himself. When he returned to the older man, handing him the food and his coffee, he nearly broke into tears. He smiled and asked “Why? Why are you doing this for me?” The young man smiled in return and said, “I know what it is like to be lonely. Jesus loves you.” The older man thanked him and said, “Praise your Jesus. Thank you Jesus.” The young man and his new friend sat down at a table in the coffee shop and spoke for nearly an hour. The young man asked him if he could buy him groceries before they parted but the older man refused saying, “You have already done so much for me today. God bless you!” - From Fables of Good Will.
