The Right Direction:
One time, there was a young man who had only just gotten his driver’s license. His father had lent him his car for the evening, after the family had practiced safety and the laws of the road with him for a month. That night, he was out driving to a friend’s party. He was driving on the freeway. The sun was nearly set and he was admiring the colorful skies on the horizon. It seemed as though he was the only one on the road. Something was out of place. He had been aware of the uneasy feeling he had been experiencing for the past minute. His eyes darted from side to side, surveying the landscape and the road ahead of him. Suddenly, his head turned, he saw the cause of his uneasy feeling. A car was on the other side of the freeway, driving in the same direction as him! He nearly jumped in his seat as he quickly assessed the road in front of this rogue car. There appeared to be no cars coming but that would change very quickly. He considered quickly but could not come up with a solution until he spotted a couple of hundred yards off, a turnabout in the freeway. A surge of adrenaline rushed through him as he sped up quickly and rounded into the turnabout. He called out loudly and started to wave out the driver’s side window. He watched with fright as the car passed and seemed to not pay attention to him. Again, he looked up the freeway that she was travelling on, seeing there was no one coming, he sped along up to the side of the car. Looking in the car window, he noticed it was an older woman. He waved at her and she rolled down the window. “You’re going in the wrong direction!” He cried. She considered what he was saying and then, looking out the other window, she saw two cars on the other side of the freeway traveling with her in the same direction. She turned back to him in terror. He waved his hand and indicated for her to pull off to the side of the road and to stop the car. His car followed in behind hers as the brake lights lit up. He walked up to the side of the car slowly and asked her if she was okay. She was visibly shaking and tears were welling in her eyes. “I must have gotten on the wrong ramp,” she cried. He asked her if she’d been drinking, if she were on medication, about her eyes. She said that all was fine but that she had only misread the sign. He believed her. He reassured her and then asked her if he could drive her to the other side. She nodded, undid her seatbelt and stood. He escorted her to the passenger seat and returned, sitting behind the wheel of her car. He moved the seat back a bit and assessed the road again before turning the car about. He drove slowly again at the side of the road until they were at the turnabout. There, he parked the car and went to step out. Her hand held his arm. He turned to face her and she was smiling warmly. “I think you saved my life, young man. And who knows how many others.” He smiled and told her to get home safely and to pay attention to street signs. The young man walked back along the freeway as he watched with joy and peace, the woman pull back onto the right side of the road and speed off. - From Fables of Good Will.
